Shiba Inu

Overview

The Shiba Inu is a very friendly dog. They are small and hyper. Not as hyper as a lot of other small dogs, but they are still plenty energetic. They don't like everyone at first, but it doesn't take them long for people to get on their good side. They love being with family.

Activity

This dog doesn't need as much exercise as other dogs might. They like being indoors most, and are perfectly content hanging around their family. This is true regardless of whether they like to sit around or go out and play. However, walking them on a regular basis is a good way to keep them healthy.

Care

The coat on Shiba Inus contains waterproof properties, so if you bathe them excessively, or more than absolutely necessary, you can remove the waterproof properties of their coat. Other than caring for their fur, there isn't much you have to worry about as far as health goes, other than basic vet check-ups.

Character

Shiba Inus are smaller dogs with perky ears and stiff coats. They have an alert nature, but are not overly suspicious of others. They do not much care for strangers at first, but are quick to warm up to those that they don't know. Very affectionate towards their owners, they adore their family.

Coat

Shiba Inus have a double coat that is made up of some stiff fur. The undercoat is shorter than the fur above it and much softer. The upper coat is the one that remains sturdy and long. It's fur gets somewhat bushier towards the back. These dogs are not big shedders.

Temperament

Shiba Inus are an intelligent breed. They make for great alarm dogs, but unfortunately, can be constant barkers if not properly tempered. Other than being alert, these dogs are affectionate creatures with a joyous outlook. They have a great attachment to their owner, and can be very protective of them at times.

Training

The Shiba Inu breed of dog is very easy to housebreak. They are intelligent and can catch onto things very quickly. To make these dogs obedient, however, it is always the best idea to start a firm training regimen at a young age, before they grow too defiant and stubborn to be taught.
