Overview
The Cardigan Welsh Corgi originated in county Cardiganshire in Wales. These dogs are extremely loyal and intelligent and started out as work dogs around the farm. They love attention and strive to please their owners while also being protective. Even though they are short legged, this breed believes they’re large with an even bigger heart.
Activity
These dogs are full of energy and require regular exercise to keep them happy. They can do well in apartments if you are able to take them out for regular walks and play time.
Care
The care for a Cardigan Welsh Corgi is pretty simple and only requires brushing on a regular basis with a stiff brush. When they are in heavy shedding mode, you will want to brush them daily and only bathe them when necessary. Because of their stature, the Corgi is susceptible to back problems among other health issues.
Character
Cardigan Welsh Corgi dogs are exceptionally versatile due to their overwhelming intelligence. They are very loyal and affectionate with a high endurance and speed. They may be on the small side, but their heart shows them as a large and affectionate companion for any family.
Coat
The Cardigan Welsh Corgi is a double coat breed with a harsh top and soft undercoat. The top coat is water resistant and stands straight where the under coat is more dense. They tend to shed regularly with a bi-annual heavy shed that requires constant grooming to keep them looking good.
Temperament
The Cardigan Welsh Corgi has a great personality to go along with their overwhelming intelligence and sense of courage. Companionship with humans is what they strive for most, but they are a bit wary of any strangers that might appear. They are highly loyal and protective of their families, and can become aggressive breeds of dogs that are not Corgis.
Training
Because of the intelligence that the Cardigan Welsh Corgi has, they tend to be very easy to train. You will need to start obedience and socialization training at an early age, though, and crate training is suggested for housetraining. They excel at agility and herding and are used extensively for search and rescue and as therapy dogs.
