Overview

The origins for the American Staffordshire Terrier puppy have long been the subject of many debates. Many believe that the American Staffordshire Terrier is the same breed as the American Pit Bull Terrier. However, the American Staffordshire Terrier is the show dog and the American Pit Bull Terrier is the fighter. While they are considered to be the same breed, they’re recognized as different breeds by different registries. They have the same build and qualities.

Activity

Lots of exercise is required for the American Staffordshire Terrier puppy because they’re so lively and energetic. These dogs aren’t meant for apartments because they tend to get bored, which can lead them to destructive acts. They need at least a medium size yard so they can get at least 2 hours of exercise daily. In addition, they should be taken or long walks or runs.

Care

Little grooming is required for the American Staffordshire Terrier puppies as they’re very shorthaired. Also, depending on their climate, they go from little to average shedding. It only takes rubbing the American Staffordshire Terrier puppies down with a dry towel, or a rubber glove made specifically for this purpose. Rather than bathing this dog frequently, it’s recommended to use dry shampoo.

Character

For years, the American Staffordshire Terrier has been used in dog fighting. They are, however, gentle, loving and very devoted to their owners. This breed is a great choice as a companion for an experienced and dominate owner. In addition, they’re excellent guard dogs since they’re so protective of their home, family and territory overall.

Coat

The coat of the American Staffordshire Terrier puppy is quite short and needs only minimal to no grooming. This breed’s coat should always been the same length, short and straight all over the dog’s body. It should also stay stiff and lie close to the dog’s body. The coat of the American Staffordshire Terrier puppy shouldn’t be silky or soft but always glossy.

Temperament

The stable and even temperament of the American Staffordshire Terrier puppy makes this an excellent companion. While this breed does well with small children, they should never be left alone around them due to being a rambunctious and powerful breed. American Staffordshire Terrier puppies get along quite will with other dogs. However, the fighting breed should never be in the same home with another dog because they will still have the aggressiveness. Proper research should be done to be sure of the dog’s temperament.

Training

As the American Staffordshire Terrier puppy has lots of energy, training can be a little hard. This is an intelligent, willful and stubborn breed and therefore requires firm and consistent training by a dominant handler. This will prevent issues of dominance that may come up. A willful and powerful breed such as the American Staffordshire Terrier needs firm correction. It’s better to get them into obedience classes when they’re young.
